JOSIAH CHINAMANO Primary School clinched the Edgars Provincial Schools Cricket Tournament held at Magwegwe Primary School last week.

The tournament, which was a two day event only, saw two districts out of five being represented at the schools competition.

The teams that partook in the event from Mzilikazi district were Magwegwe, Mawaba, Ingwegwe, Gampu, Mtshane and Insukamini. The Reigate district was represented by Baines, SOS, Mzilikazi Lobhengula, Zulukandaba, Josiah Chinamano, Mthombowesizwe, Indlovu Iyanyathela and Mtshingwe.

The teams were placed into two groups were they battled to reach the knock out stages.

In the semi-final, Mtshingwe Primary School lost to Magwegwe Primary by six wickets, while Josiah Chinamano defeated Baines by 16 runs to book their place in the final against Magwegwe.

Josiah Chinamano Primary beat Magwegwe Primary by 28 runs in a tense final match to win this year’s Edgars Provincial Schools Tournament.

Magwegwe Primary School clinched bates man of the tourney prize, while the best in fielder and bowler came from Josiah Chinamano Primary school.

In an interview, the Provincial head in charge of cricket in the Bulawayo province Jenifer Mpofu said the tournament was a great success even though many schools from the province failed to attend.

‘The event was a great success even though many schools had not participated in the tourney because it was set towards the school holidays,’ she said.

The talent was visible and the children performed very well, showing a great deal of skill and potential,’ she added.

Mpofu thanked Edgars for sponsoring the tournament and giving an opportunity to the pupils to showcase their talent.

‘Such tournaments unearth and identify talent among others, so we are happy that Edgars sponsored our junior cricket provincial tournament,’ Mpofu told Sunday Life Sport.

The Edgars Corporate Social Responsibility manager Luke Chipepera said he was happy with the level of cricket displayed by the pupils and they are happy to be working with the Tigers Cricket Academy, as part of giving back to the community. — @ J_sihwa
