The  Matabeleland North Athletics coach, Tawanda Mutero, has called upon  schools to open up athletics clubs as a way of addressing their constant poor run in the National Association of Secondary Heads athletics championships.

Speaking after the end of the Naaz inter-provincial championships, which were held in Bulawayo last week, Mutero said that schools from his province must form athletics clubs which will help nurture talent.

“I am calling upon schools in Matabeleland North to open up athletics clubs both at primary and secondary level, this development will help raise the athletics standards of the province,” he said.

One of the their athletes Nqobizitha Mpofu, who won gold in the senior men long jump was full of praise of his coach’s view.

“The idea is brilliant because it will help athletes to be competitive throughout the year. These clubs are what we lack as a province, hence l think if we are to form them, our province will start to improve in the national competitions.”

Mutero guided Mat North to fourth position at the Naaz championships, the same position that they took last year and a number of athletes from the province were selected to represent Zimbabwe at the Youth Olympics in Argentina in August.
