A SOUTH Korean information technology expert is set to share important technology related information on the future of the sector at an upcoming Computer Society of Zimbabwe (CSZ) summer school, as the country continues to strive to spur development through Information Communication Technology.
In an interview, CSZ Harare chapter chairperson Mr Givemore Dube said inviting Mr Jaedok Shim from South Korea was a deliberate strategy by the computer society as the Asian country was known as the world’s most advanced ICT economy on the basis of ICT usage, access and skills.

South Korea has made ICT development a policy priority and integrated its use in many aspects of society.
“It is important to get a taste of where technology is going and since ICTs were identified as one of the key enablers of the economy, we have to start looking at what we have to do and envision future opportunities anchored on technology,” said Mr Dube.

Mr Shim will make a presentation on ‘looking into the future — envisioning future technologies’.
The CSZ summer school will be held from 12 to 15 November in Victoria Falls under the theme “IT Governance – A Pillar for Development”.
Mr Dube said the theme was meant to give the participants ample opportunity to consider the transformational capacity and power of well governed information technology at the enterprise, community, national and global levels.

“Participants from a wide spectrum will be afforded an opportunity to understand IT governance as it relates internally to the information and communication technology sector and in its broader sense as it looks beyond.

It is the transformative power of well governed IT that will spur development.
The nation is facing a state of stagnation and we feel IT or ICT can be that jumpstart it needs,” he said.

Some of the issues to be discussed during the conference include the potential of ICTs to answer the developmental needs of the nation and society.

“Investing in their entrepreneurial capacity, elimination of barriers, creation of an enabling environment and redirection of their energies and enthusiasms towards innovation and start-ups will certainly grow the sector and the economy,” said Mr Dube.
