LACK of funding has seen the Zimbabwe Baseball Association shelving their plans to participate at the South African Baseball Union championships scheduled for Gauteng, South Africa starting Saturday, an official has said. ZBA secretary-general Sheilah Chikovi said the baseball representative national side had been hit by logistical challenges and would not make the trip for the week long event.

“We were unable to procure enough funding because we were supposed to take part in the junior and senior categories, and we did not receive adequate support from well wishers,” said Chikovi.

Chikovi, however, said ZBA needed to put proper structures in place, a development she believed might ease their financial constraints which have seen them fail to fulfill a number of international assignments.

“We basically need to regroup as an association and restore the confidence of corporates hence it is crucial for us to tap from the grassroots and strengthen relations so that we can have reliable and sound sponsors,” she said.

Chikovi said the association would go back to the provinces to put in place structures that would be responsible for the development and restructuring of the game.

The championships, that will be hosted by Easterns Baseball Association, will feature a week long seniors’ and juniors’ events.
