A MAN from Kadoma was on Friday sentenced to nine months in prison for hunting and killing a male kudu before selling the meat at a nearby mining compound.

Enock Mawarire (31) of Stand number 14 Village 2 Circle G in Kadoma received the sentence after Kwekwe magistrate Mr Lavroe Philemon found him guilty of contravening the Parks and Wildlife Act.

Mawarire was sentenced after he pleaded guilty to hunting and killing a male kudu before being arrested while selling the meat at a nearby mining compound.

Mawarire will however serve an effective six months after Mr Philemon set aside three months on condition he does not commit a similar offence in three years.

The State led by Ms Michelle Daraja proved that on 14 June around 5 am, Mawarire proceeded to Midlands Black Rhino Conservancy Circle G Ranch in Kwekwe.

He went on to hunt and killed a male kudu using dogs and spears.

He skinned the kudu before taking the meat for sale at a nearby mine.

On the same date, however, a game ranger Mr Vincent Maphosa who was on patrol, heard dogs barking in the park.

Mr Maphosa alerted some of the game ranger and they proceeded to the place where the barking was coming from.

They found a head, skin and two spears at the place.

The game rangers, however, tracked the trails which led them to Cheko Mine where they found Mawarire selling the meat and arrested him.

The kudu is valued at about $2 000.
