YOUTHS in Matabeleland North Province missed out on a job opportunity as less than 600 out of an anticipated 2 000 turned up for interviews called by mobile operator NetOne on Friday.

The state-owned mobile telecommunications operator was targeting to recruit 2 000 job seekers in the province to become brand ambassadors. NetOne pledged to create up to 20 000 jobs countrywide as part of its business growth this year in line with the empowerment thrust under Zim Asset, with each of the country’s 10 provinces given 2 000 slots.

While more than 5 000 turned up to be interviewed in Bulawayo on Monday last week, only less than 600 turned up for the Matabeleland North Province interviews held in Victoria Falls on Friday, the company said.

“We were targeting 2 000 in Matabeleland North but the turnout was very low. We had just around 600 since morning and we attempted to recruit from those available but some were disqualified obviously,” NetOne zone commander for Bulawayo, Matabeleland North and South Ms Elmah Dube said.

It could not be established how many qualified as a sizeable number did not meet the requirements where prospective candidates were required to have passed five Ordinary Level subjects. However, some residents said while the low turnout could be attributed to limited number of people meeting requirements, the mobile network provider should also take the blame for not decentralising the exercise to districts as some could have failed to travel.

Some travelled from as far as Lupane and Binga while the majority were from Victoria Falls. Ms Dube said there will be a second round of the exercise as preference is being given to locals in any province.

“We will do it in phases where we take these ones then maybe after three months we have another round as we strive to complement Government in creating jobs in line with Zim Asset,” she said.

Training for those who made it will start on Monday in Victoria Falls for those from Matabeleland North Province while interviews for Matabeleland South will be conducted tomorrow and on Tuesday in Masvingo.

Ms Dube said the brand ambassadors will be responsible for selling the company’s products in their provinces where they will be required to move door to door as NetOne fights to reclaim the position as the number one mobile phone operator.

“NetOne is a giant and this giant is awake. It’s high time we take our number one position and we are not stopping until we achieve this,” she said. @ncubeleon
