THE first round of the Chibuku Super Cup soccer tie featuring Chicken Inn and Yadah was abandoned in the dying minutes at Ascot Stadium yesterday after Yadah were awarded a penalty which was disputed by the Bulawayo side.

Storm was brewing prior to the match when Chicken Inn were protesting to have their match staged in Gweru instead of Bulawayo saying it was their right to have the match played in Bulawayo as a seeded team. Controversy struck again in the 86th minute when referee Munyaradzi Majoni awarded the Yadah a penalty.

The Chicken Inn technical team summoned their players to the touchline ordering them not to continue with the match unless the decision was reversed. The match officials waited for more than 30 minutes for Chicken Inn players to return for the resumption before abandoning the match.

“Chicken Inn protested the decision by the referee and walked out of the pitch. We waited for 30 minutes but they did not return leaving us with no option but to call off the game,” said the match day commissioner Nelson Kusosa.

Chicken Inn coach Rahman Gumbo fumed at match officiating and was not in a mood to entertain the media.

“No comment, what can I say about this poor officiating,” he said.

Championship contenders Chicken Inn’s only defeat in their previous ten league matches was a home loss to the Prophet Magaya-owned team.

Gumbo’s men dominated the entire contest thanks to Clemence Matawu who was in a devastating form that gave the opponent a torrid time. But forwards Kudakwashe Gurure and Obadiah Tarumbwa took turns to miss the target after some perfect deliveries from the midfield. They were left to rue those chances when Moses Jackson impeded Milton Makopa inside the box which led to a penalty decision.
