BULAWAYO rapper Maestro IV has surely come a long way in getting recognition in the rap game, if his latest video Run This Town is worth the mention.

Born Melusi Nyathi, Maestro dropped a red hot album — Married to the Game — in August last year, which has been said to be one of the best rap albums from Bulawayo.

Maestro went from underground to one of the most promising rappers to emerge from the City of Kings, with his album and is one of the few rappers in Bulawayo that have been actively fighting for nationwide recognition.

His latest project — Run This Town is the second video single taken off his second album Married to the Game. It shows a beautiful view of the city where the artiste was born and raised in.

He said this was just the tip of the iceberg as he had joined forces with several other local up-and-coming artistes.

“We aren’t stopping here, we are yet to run this town,” he said.

The Bulawayo hip-hop industry is one of the most aggressive in the country having brought rise to acts like Cal_Vin, Asaph, Mzoe 7, Guluva 7, P.O.Y, Awa Khiwe, Navy Seal, Orthodox Six and Maestro IV. There has sometimes arisen a tendency to smack talk from artistes and fans alike but Maestro IV in his newest visual offering says he runs the town and is disinterested in competition.

Maestro IV also known as the “Top JITA” remains as lyrical as he has always been over the years. The artiste has always employed revolutionary methods of portraying his art, a case in point being his “Majaivana back” from previous years.

According to Maestro in relation to the setting, “It was fitting to the concept; the track is Run This Town so we wanted a location and visuals that will complement that on top of one of the city’s tallest buildings and drone shots covering most of the town.”

Maestro began throwing bars and rhymes while he was still young, as he says he took after his late father who was a musician.

“I grew up in a musical background, my late father Jerry Nyathi also known as JB was a musician,” he said.

Maestro IV writes, records, produces and basically does his own music, as he said he runs his own studio.

He is the CEO and founder of CMG, Chilliaphonia Music Group.

Talking about his debut project, which featured the hit track Majaivana Back and a few other hot singles, such as Holy Grail, Maestro IV said he earned at least 12 000 downloads in the first days of its release.

“It wasn’t for sale, it was a free project and people liked it,” he said.

His album however, comes in two packages, the standard version which is the album and is going for $4 and there is the gold version which contains all the 23 tracks plus a Top JITA cap and earphones.

“There has never been a better time to be a musician than now. People now appreciate local content than before and 2017 will be my year. I see myself growing locally and internationally,” he said.

With many of his tracks playing on local stations, Maestro IV says he is seeking to forge international relations with artistes.

“I have done a couple of videos as it is for my latest album and fans should expect them to drop anytime soon,” he said, saying he was inspired by the environment he lives in, especially by the youths.
