WOMEN spend a lot of money trying to enhance their beauty and improve their looks with the use of make-up. Make-up can be a blessing when used the correct way but for most this can be a challenge. Some want to doll up and look nice for their boyfriends but 90 percent of men don’t like make-up on their women. Most guys prefer a girl to be natural than a girl who’s wearing “cake-up” which means that she has make-up caked onto her face.

When applying makeup, the standard rule is to let one feature stand out. NOT all of them! That means you don’t need bright red lipstick AND a dark smokey eye AND bright pink cheeks. Choose one feature to stand out, and keep the others neutral or minimal. That’s the key to looking fresh and beautiful. Make sure your foundation matches your skin tone exactly! You can’t fake having a lighter skin tone by applying three shades lighter than your skin tone, that makes you look grey.

Top 8 make-up mistakes

1 Your brows are too defined — If you have to draw your brows on because you’ve over-plucked them, that’s one thing, but if you’re trying to enhance what you already have, all you need is a light dusting of a brow powder one shade lighter than your brow hair, applied with a slant-tip brush or a few swipes of a brow mascara. Brows are meant to look feathery and full (this style makes you look more youthful, too), rather than so defined they look fake. The instagram brow seems to be a trend of late, the eyebrows look so defined you look completely different. Do try to make them pop but still keeping it natural.

2 Your foundation doesn’t match your skin tone — This is a challenge for most and it results in your face looking a different colour from the rest of your body. Unless it is Halloween, avoid this. You don’t want any lines of demarcation between your face, neck, and chest. To make sure you get the right shade when you’re out shopping, swipe a sample of the product over your jawline to see if it blends seamlessly.

3 Your false lashes look obvious — False eyelashes can go wrong really quickly. If you’re not getting them professionally done and you want to use a full strip, make sure to apply the band of lashes as close to your lash line as you can; once they dry, apply eyeliner over it. This will help mask where the falsies begin and end. Otherwise, if you’re good at putting on individual lashes, they’re always more natural-looking. Having long tacky eyelashes has never looked good on anyone.

4 You’re concealing pimples with a concealer that is too bright — When you have a pimple, you want to take the attention away from it, not draw attention to it. By covering it with a lighter concealer, you’re basically asking people to look at it. Do use a concealer the same shade as your skin tone or darker.

5 Not blending your foundation onto your chest when it’s exposed — If you’re wearing something that reveals your décolletage (plunging neckline exposing the neck and cleavage), you have to extend your foundation onto your chest. Otherwise, you’ll end
