MOST of us from time to time get to host different people for different reasons in our homes, be it relatives or friends. Turn your guest room into a retreat; make it a home away from home.

Creative director of Ragner Enterprises, Mrs Karen Masuku gives an insight on how to make your guest room comfortable.

Masuku said there are certain essential things that need to be considered to make your guest room feel and look comfortable.

She said: “One of the most basic essential things for this particular room is to keep it clean, inviting and uncluttered. In most homes a guest room is where unused stuff is placed but make sure that when you have guests over you keep your personal items out of this room to create space.”

“Make sure the bedding is fresh, wash the bed cover and bed sheets from time to time especially if they are white because one can easily tell that they have been washed and ironed. Keep extra blankets and quills clean and place them in the closet.

“As a note for those that like accent pillow (scatter pillows) that you scatter on your bed, it will be wise to provide a basket or somewhere to put those pillows when there is a guest instead of putting them on the floor because most of the time when they have gone we tend to just dust them off and put them away,” explained Masuku.

She added that “lighting is also essential in the guest room; place a lamp on the side board of the bed. This will be helpful to someone who likes reading be it late in the night or very early in the morning. That way the light will be closer to where they are.

“Nice and inviting fluffy towels are also important, this saves both your guest from having to ask you every day when they are bathing, in a colour that is easy to maintain.”

Masuku said having outlets near the bed is a noble idea; this may be a small table for electronics, whether it’s a phone or laptop for charging.

“You need to provide adequate storage space for your guests, such as the closet with coat hangers. Make sure that your personal stuff is removed because at times guests can have luggage.

“To complete the look of your space, place a soft colourful area rug. Put flowers in the guest room, preferably fresh ones that will bring a soothing fresh atmosphere the room. Full length mirror has multiple functions, it can be used for decorative purposes as well as maximising the room,” explained Masuku.
