DEPUTY Minister of Home Affairs Cde Obedingwa Mguni last week handed over 206 chicks and chicken feed to youths from Empandeni in Mangwe District in a bid to reduce the youth unemployment rate.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Cde Mguni said he has handed over the chicks to seven wards in Mangwe so as to empower youths to have their own source of living.

“This is a pass-on project where the first group in each ward will breed the chickens, sell them and pass on the start up money to the next group in the same ward. This rotation will continue until all groups have money and are all covered. Empandeni is the eighth ward to benefit from the scheme. I will also be reviving the Madlala tournament in soccer and netball. However, the prizes are not monetary but will be materialistic to empower you and give you more skill and learn how to work as co-operatives,” he said.

Cde Mguni, who is the MP for Mangwe said most of the youths are facing immense abuse from unknown people in a bid to stay alive so the poultry project will help them make their own source of living.

“Most of the youth in this district are relying on crossing the borders to Botswana and South Africa to seek employment and this has not yielded any positive results as most of them come carrying babies out of wedlock, are arrested or even suffer from sexually transmitted diseases from individuals whom they seek survival from while in those foreign countries.

“I have brought a starting point to empower you as the fathers and mothers of tomorrow. You have to start taking responsibility of running these projects by making your own source of living in the form of money and in your own country without any fear or abuse while you contribute positively in building the country’s economy.

“I am bringing in more experts from the SMEs, youth development, indigenisation and economic empowerment so as to beef up your skills in becoming the best entrepreneurs the country can ever have. It is my wish to monitor and mentor your progress and induce patriotism to you by creating a conducive environment for you to develop yourselves,” he said.

Chief Velenjani Hobodo, who is one of the directors of the poultry project, paid gratitude to Cde Mguni for what he has done for the youths in Mangwe constituency.

“It’s a step into the light for the youths who have been victims of unemployment. Through these projects of poultry farming, their way of earning a living has been improved. This also highlights the hard work our Member of Parliament Cde Mguni is doing in a bid to empower the youth and also to develop the constituency. We thank him for his wonderful works, we are grateful and very happy,” said Chief Hobodo.

Zanu-PF Hobodo village youth chairperson Mr Tshamani Ndlovu also paid gratitude on behalf of youths.
“On behalf of my fellow youths, I would like to thank our Honourable Deputy Minister for what he has done for us and other wards in the constituency. We have acquired a lucrative source of income and this is the start of great things. Watch the space; with the chicks that he gave us to pioneer our project, we have managed to sell almost all the chickens. This programme has upgraded our lives to a very large extent. We are ready to invest the money into bigger projects,” said Mr Ndlovu.
