MANYEWU Primary School are the winners of the monthly Fawcett Security Tag Rugby event which was held at Hartsfield Rugby Grounds on Friday.
A total of 14 schools from Bulawayo took part in the event.

Manyewu thrashed Ntabeni 10-0. The matches involved both boys and girls.

Matabeleland Rugby Football Board (MRFB) development officer, George “Rollo” Mukorera said the initiative was part of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) development programme.

“Since the beginning of the year coaches from MRFB have been going to schools as part of this development programme.

“Every month we have held these competitions and it is crucial that as we approach the end of the year we will give a feedback to our sponsors who are keen on seeing every child play rugby and their efforts being put to good use,” said Mukorera.

Mukorera said that they are aiming at introducing an inter-provincial tournament under the National Association of Primary Heads (Naph) next year so as to increase popularity of the sport as well as appreciate the developmental programmes they have held this year.

Baines Junior who won last month’s edition of the grassroots competition were, however, thrashed in the first qualifying round by first timers Milton Junior.

Eliazel Chikoore, Fawcett regional manager (Matabeleland), said the company is happy to be associated with ZRU and school children are a priority to them hence assisting them with sponsorship.

“The programme is meant to target the less privileged in developing their talent at grassroots level, hence we aim to assist these kids who have shown skill and expertise in the sport,” he said.

The Fawcett Security programme is similar to the one that ZRU and Old Mutual are running countrywide.

Featured schools were Tennyson, Baines Junior, Ntabeni, Manyewu, Zulukandaba, Mthombowesizwe, Entumbane,

Mahlabezulu, Mahlathini, Mgiqika, Tategulu, Mbizo, Milton Junior, Hillside Junior and Inkanyezi.
