BREAKING into the cosmetic industry in the US was not a walk in the park for Zimbabwe-born make-up artist — Jackie Muchanyuka-Mgido who has had the opportunity to work with high profile celebrities from Hollywood.

She attributed her success to her unwavering faith and determination to be known as a huge make-up artist in the world.

Mgido is the proud owner and creator of Vault Cosmetics and Vault Academy Make-up School.

She has had the opportunity to work on the likes of US rapper Snoop Dog, RnB singer John Legend, actor and singer Jamie Foxx and big screen action movie star Sylvester Stallone.

“One of the people that have really great skin is John Legend. He’s so cute and so polite, I love him. I also had to even out his skin tone. I have also worked with Sylvester Stallone and the thing with Sylvester is he’s very red, so you don’t want him to look that red on television, so you have to counterbalance that. There’s a whole lot of science behind it,” said Mgido.

She launched her cosmetic products in Bulawayo early this year, where 2013 Big Brother South Africa winner Dillish Matthews was the guest of honour at the launch.

Mgido said she decided to launch her company and brand in Zimbabwe to impart the knowledge she has acquired in America.

“I came to Zimbabwe for a visit and I realised something that was very vital and that is education for make-up.

‘Make-up was not being imported; the only make-up which was being imported was those American brands for white people. That drove me to open Vault Cosmetic with the hope of educating my fellow sisters,” she said.

Mgido moved to America 20 years ago and ventured into the cosmetics industry four years later.

She recalls not being comfortable with her skin when she was young, which is what led her to wear make-up.

“I became a make-up artist because of my own personal insecurities, I never thought I was an attractive kid and it was hard for me to fit in with other kids. Make-up allowed me to be able to bring in what was hidden in me by enhancing my features that were not being seen because I was darker, so I started wearing make-up and that’s when I discovered the magic of what make-up did to my self-esteem.

“When wearing make-up I always felt like I was wearing a super-hero outfit and I could do anything that I wanted to do,” she said.

Now an internationally acclaimed make-up artist with a wide range of experience working with Hollywood celebrities, Mgido said she moved to Saint Louis to be a veterinarian.

Instead of following that path she said she decided to learn beauty therapy.

“I was going to be a vet but I later changed my mind and went for hairdressing because there were no make-up schools. I then discovered that I really wanted to do make-up so I started interning for different cosmetic lines.

“While there I always wondered how people ended up on television and I wanted to do what they did so I moved to Hollywood and went to school again and started interning for different people and before I knew it, I was working on celebrities,” said Mgido.

The 41-year-old is married and has a seven-year-old daughter.
