mlibiziMLIBIZI Hotel in Binga has successfully completed the refurbishment of its airstrip which was run down in the past years due to under-utilisation, an official has confirmed.

In an interview, Mlibizi Hotel manager Mr Maxmillan Chigubhu said they had renovated the Mlibizi airstrip in anticipation of increased air traffic to the district which is renowned for its tourism potential.

“We managed to fix our airstrip and it is now landable. A South African company came and inspected the runway and approved that it is in good condition to accommodate flights,” said Mr Chigubhu.

He was hopeful that operators would now start considering running flights to Binga.

“The challenge that we have now is we don’t have flights that are coming to land at the airstrip. We are hopeful that since we have renovated, we will start receiving them,” he said.

He said the airstrip was last used sometime in 2009.

Mr Chigubhu said it would take 15 minutes to travel from Victoria Falls to Binga and about 40 minutes to travel from Harare to Binga.

He said tourist arrivals in the area had gone down in the past months and they were reducing the accommodation rates in a bid to woe them.

“We have reduced our accommodation rates for the locals so that they can come and visit our place,” said Mr Chigubhu.

He said there were plenty of breathtaking tourism sites that delegates could possibly fly and see in Binga.

“We have many spectacular sites that people can come and see here. We have the hot springs, bird watch and we have boat cruises.”

“We have the best road and mobile network. Our hotel has a capacity to host 50 people per day. We also have other lodges in the area that can also host many people,” he said.

Mlibizi Hotel is one of the leading hotels in Binga and has hosted many high profile delegates and government officials.

The state-of-the-art hotel is located near the Zambezi River in Binga.

The place used to receive tourists from across the globe in various countries such as the United States of America, United Kingdom, and other European countries when business was lucrative but in recent years, the number has gone down.
