RECENTLY elected Zimbabwe Cricket board member Vumindaba Moyo has resigned as an employee of the organisation. Moyo, voted as the Bulawayo Metropolitan Cricket Association chairman in May and then elected onto the ZC board over a week ago was employed by the cricket mother body as Matabeleland Tuskers area manager. He told this publication that he ceased to be a ZC member of staff on 21 August. His reason for stepping down was for avoidance of a conflict of interest. While the ZC constitution is silent on whether an employee can also be a board member, Moyo felt he could not effectively carry out his duties while holding onto the two positions.

“I have resigned as area manager for conflict of interest, it was not an easy decision to make, in any organisation you want to be in a position where you are part of decision making, all these years I have been implementing other people’s decisions,’’ said Moyo who has been involved in the game at a national level since 1998.

He has held posts such as Matabeleland Cricket Association chairman as well as being a national selector from 2006 up to 2009. After years of being a volunteer, Moyo took up employment with ZC as Tuskers area manager in 2009.

While he is sure going to regret not having a job, achieving his dream of being on the International Cricket Council board, the 37-year-old Moyo wants to leave a mark in cricket administration in Zimbabwe and internationally. He also feels the new ZC board is made up of passionate individuals and is optimistic they are going to make a change in the game.
“I want to leave a legacy, of course I will regret not having a fulltime job, it was a big decision that I made.

“The ZC board is made up of young enthusiastic people, hopefully we will see a difference. It has always been something that has been in my thoughts, one day I want to be on the ICC board, this is part of my roadmap,’’ Moyo said.

The ZC board member is for equality for everyone in Zimbabwe and his dream is to give an opportunity to the less privileged members of society and ensure that there is at least a grass wicket in each province in the near future.

Moyo is keen to leave a mark in the game since he feels that the recent election showed that if one is not working or perceived not to be working they are booted out.
The ZC board is holding its first meeting on 11 September and that is when appointments into various committees within the union are going to be made. Moyo is believed to be eyeing the position of cricket committee chairperson.

That working group is responsible mainly for the appointment of national team coaches and captains.
On the issue of all cricket matches on note being played in Harare, Moyo said he was going to do all in his power to make sure that Bulawayo gets a share of the game.
“Obviously if you are from outside Harare you feel aggrieved, it is an issue we have brought up, it is a burning issue, we need to spread the game, whenever I have within my power we will have matches played in other parts of the country,’’ Moyo said.

With more individuals on the ZC board from outside Harare, cricket fans in other parts of the country should have optimism that their concerns will be addressed. ZC chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani and Moyo join Arthur Maphosa as well as Elisha Kandi as the people based in Matabeleland on the board.
