MIDLANDS State University has started developing over 220 hectares of land donated to the institution by Kwekwe City Council to pave way for the construction of a state-of-the-art School of Law in the gold mining town.

MSU recently spread its wings to Mutare, Harare and Zvishavane as it continues with its expansion drive and in line with its multi campus thrust.

In an interview, MSU registrar Mr Erasmus Mupfiga said the land had already been surveyed by the institution’s surveying department and the institution was already developing the land to pave way for the construction of the Law School.

“What is happening is that as part of our multi-campus approach we are extending our tentacles to Kwekwe. We were offered a substantial amount of land by the Municipality of Kwekwe of about 220 hectares.

“We are already developing that piece of land and hope to establish a proper Law School. Where we are is just temporary and if everything goes well we are going to build a state-of-the-art Law School down there.

“We are also developing the roads in that area and we are fencing it off,” he said.

Mr Mupfiga said the university had started enrolling students for its new faculty of medicine which was introduced last semester and is an affiliate of the University of Zimbabwe.

He said they have enrolled 20 students in their March intake and were looking forward to enrolling the same number for their August intake.

“Well, remember the programme we are running is a University of Zimbabwe programme and we did not start our own faculty of medicine right from scratch.

“We are teaching an already approved programme which is a UZ programme until such a time when we are able to stand on our own feet. So the quality standards are as set by UZ because it is their degree.

“However, there is a whole team running the show here in Gweru and our Dean is Dr Reginald Matshaba-Hove.

“We have started with only 20 students. And again if we are guided by the University of Zimbabwe we may do another intake in August of another 20,” said Mr Mupfiga.
