MSU wins Pan-African debate competitions

MIDLANDS State University (MSU) was crowned champions in the Pan-African Universities Debate Championship (PAUDC) 2017 annual competitions that were held at the University of Buea, in Cameroon.

PAUDC, is a debate competition that draws participants from Pan-African countries.

The regular participants are Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Uganda, Kenya, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa.

MSU travelled to the University of Buea, in Cameroon where they took on more than 60 teams from over 12 African countries at the 10th edition of the continental debate showcase.

The eight-day competition ran from 7 to 15 December under the theme “Debate, the 21st Century Alternative to Violence”.

“In yet another historic achievement for both the University and Zimbabwe, Midlands State University’s debate team affectionately known as the Great Debaters made history by becoming the first-ever Zimbabwean team to be crowned as champions.

Having hosted the tournament last year (2016), this year, Midlands State University travelled to the University of Buea, in Cameroon where they took on more than 60 teams from over 12 African countries at the 10th edition of the continental debate showcase,” said MSU in a statement.

MSU’s Minenhle Nzana was also awarded the Best Country Speaker for Zimbabwe.

“Team MSU comprising of Minenhle Nzana and Tanaka Chitongo distinguished themselves well, displaying exceptional debate and intellectual prowess to win the competition.

To cap off an already historic achievement, Nzana was also awarded the Best Country Speaker award for Zimbabwe,” reads the statement.

On behalf of the entire University community to the Great Debators, we say congratulations,” reads the statement.

MSU head of debate patron team Mr Tawanda Sibanda said he was proud of the team.

“We are very proud and humbled by the success of the team which represented our country very well in the competition. It is the first time that we have taken the trophy in this very prestigious competition,” he said.

Last year’s competitions were held at the Midlands State University with PAUD chairperson Miss Charity Makhala from Botswana saying the tournament was well organised.
