ZVISHAVANE Town Council has entered into a partnership with a local construction company JM Construction for the construction of a multimillion dollar state-of-the-art shopping complex.

The shopping complex is part of the mining town’s drive to expand its Central Business District (CBD), as it gears for municipality status by 2019.

Town council secretary Mr Tinoda Mukutu told Sunday News that the new complex would help decongest the current CBD.

Mr Mukutu said work on the construction of the complex was set to start soon, with plans for the structure having been approved. He said the local authority was engaging potential investors to secure funding for the project. About 56 000 square metres of land, near TM Supermarket, have been reserved for the construction of the complex.

“Right now we are in talks with potential investors to fund the project and they have shown great interest in partnering us. I can’t reveal the names of the potential investors because it may jeopardise negotiations. We will start construction anytime soon and all things being equal we should be done with the project by 2019,” he said.

Mr Mukutu was not in a position to reveal the projected cost of completing the project but said it could run into millions of dollars. He said in partnership with JM Construction, the local authority had provided land while the construction company was coming in with technical expertise to develop and service the site. JM Construction is also servicing housing stands within a 3km radius of the shopping complex site. Mr Mukutu said the shopping complex will not only help contain the town’s growing population but also enhance the status and outlook of the town to attract more investors.

“We are trying to be competitive. A lot of people want to come and invest in our town but not many of them are prepared to build structures. They prefer renting existing structures and that has necessitated construction of the complex which will have modern state-of-the-art structures,” he said.

According to the plan, a copy of which has been seen by Sunday News, the complex will host a wide range of retail shops including one huge supermarket, banks, gaming shops, a food court, among other services.

The complex will also house a start-of-the art hospital and service station while land for construction of residential flats adjacent to the complex has already been allocated.

The Zvishavane shopping complex will not only change the Zvishavane landscape but also impact on the lives of thousands of people in the area by creating employment prospects as well as investment opportunities.

JM Construction director Mr Jabulani Nyoni said the project will transform the face of Zvishavane as well as create employment for the town’s citizens.

“One aim is to transform this site into a massive shopping complex that offers a world class unique and enjoyable shopping experience for anyone who enjoys shopping.

“We have no doubt that this complex will positively change the lives of the people of Zvishavane by creating thousands of jobs and creating a lovely environment to relax with family and friends,” he said.
