NKAYI Primary School sporting section got a boost last week when former students donated equipment for netball and football.

The recently formed Nkayi Primary Old Students Association, formed in April 2017, bought a football kit for the senior team, two soccer balls, two balls for the netball side and a pump.

Ndumiso Khumalo, who is part of the association, said they hope the gesture will go a long way towards encouraging pupils to engage in sporting activities. He said they came together after realising the need to lend a hand to the school authorities in improving the state of the school.

“Sports usually suffer because the focus is always on the academic side when funds are lean. After the formation of the grouping as former students we decided our initial focus would be on funding sports. The school alone cannot afford to buy or run all projects due low cash flow as other parents are struggling to pay school fees,” said Khumalo.

The association’s donation was valued at R3 830. Khumalo said they are hoping to grow the association which has a membership of 29 former students. He said they would be constantly liaising with the school to ensure the equipment is used effectively and the school starts excelling in sport.

“The sports teacher, Mandlenkosi Tshuma told us their kit was in a poor state hence the new kit will go a long way towards motivating the boys in excelling but he highlighted they still have challenges in relation to boots,” said Khumalo.
