GLOBE-TROTTING all female a cappella ensemble, Nobuntu have been nominated for the prestigious Zimbabwe International Women’s Awards (Ziwa). The awards that were founded in 2013 seek to celebrate and recognise unsung heroines in the country through entrepreneurship, education, social welfare, charitable and humanitarian works, entertainment and the arts.

Nobuntu were nominated for musician of the year award alongside Ammara Brown, Chase, Tinashe and Hope Masike and may seemingly face stiff competition, given the artistes’ singing prowess.

In a post on their Facebook page, Nobuntu said they were elated to be nominated for the Ziwa Awards and called on their fans to vote for them.

“We are excited to inform you that we have been nominated for the Ziwa Awards in the musician category for 2015. Please vote for us!” read the post.

The group has made significant impact in the European market, having recently completed the Euro Summer Tour 2015 last month.

One of the group members, Duduzile Sibanda said they were making efforts to promote themselves locally and they were making strides internationally. “We are trying to promote ourselves on the few platforms that are available for us to perform like Intwasa, Ibumba and we are slowly growing. It is unfortunate that at times people do not take you seriously when you perform,” she said.

Inspired by music icons such as Chiwoniso Maraire, Duduzile said the a cappella genre was pursued by a few people worldwide and their aim was to revive it.

“There are a few groups that sing this genre world-wide and the crowd loves this music. They really appreciate this genre and people have lost the genre. People are, however, yearning for the genre and we have continued to deliver the music,” said Sibanda.

Nobuntu is an a cappella group, comprising five talented, professional young women from Bulawayo.

Their repertoire is a fusion of traditional Zimbabwean rooted music, gospel, Afro jazz and crossover in pure voices with minimalistic percussion, traditional instruments such as mbira and some dance movements.

The group is a new generation of young women singers who celebrate and preserve their culture, beauty and heritage through art.

The group, fast growing to be the region’s favourite, was founded by Dumisani Ramadu Moyo, a member of the sensational imbube group Insingizi currently based in Austria via his 10th District stable and comprises Duduzile Sibanda, Joyline Sibanda, Zanele Manhenga, Heather Dube and Thandeka Dube.

Other categories that have been listed are Artiste of the Year, Actress of the Year, Author of the Year and Blogger of the Year among other categories.
