THE National University of Science and Technology is ready to assist the Gwanda State University to be a fully-fledged stand-alone institution following its weaning off from the guardianship of the former last week.

The decision to separate GSU from Nust by the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development follows President Mugabe’s recent appointment of University Councils for nine state universities.

Former Nust Vice-Chancellor, Professor Phineas Makhurane is expected to lead the growth and expansion of GSU. Nust director of marketing and Communications, Mr Felix Moyo said they were ready to support the five-year-old university grow into a fully-fledged institution.

“We are fortunate that this is not new to us, the Harare Institute of Technology was born of Nust, Lupane State University was born of Nust. We have been ready for this moment for some time and we are going to do the same things that we used to do in the past,” said Mr Moyo.

He said they were going to offer the relevant support to GSU.

“As Nust we are bound to support Gwanda State University to be a stand-alone institutions. Where we can second staff we will do so, where there is logistical and strategic input that we should afford them we will give it to them,”

“Fortunately in this case they have their own University Council, at least we are able to hand over things at all levels, at senior management level, directors’ level and at Council level. So we are able to handover to Gwanda State University at all levels but we will continue to assist them for as long as they need our assistance,” said Mr Moyo.

Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development, Deputy Minister Dr Godfrey Gandawa said the move was a step to steer development and business opportunities in Matabeleland South.

“The appointment of the Council for Gwanda State University will see the university working as a stand-alone institution as compared to the current situation where it is being surrogated by Nust. This is a positive move indeed for it will increase business activity in Matabeleland South and buttresses the policy of a university for each province,” said Dr Gandawa.

Dr Gandawa said the ministry believed in the able leadership of Prof Makhurane, to motivate the expansion of the university.

“More so, we believe Prof Makhurane’s experience will add value to the strategic direction that the university should take to spur growth for the university and Matebeleland South as a whole or even at national level,” said Dr Gandawa.

Gwanda State University, founded in 2012 has been under the guardianship of the National University of Science and Technology. GSU has been operating as a Nust college based at Epoch Mine premises in Filabusi.

It offers programmes in the faculties of Life Sciences and Engineering to suit the needs of Matabeleland South province.

Among the degrees on offer is the Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and Animal Husbandry, Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Minerals and Mining Engineering, Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Applied Biology and Biochemistry, Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Applied Chemistry. Dr Sikhulumani Bayeza Mangena is the designate Vice-Chancellor for the new university.
