PERFUMES, scented oils and other fragrances have been used by people since early civilisation. In this day, fragrances can be found in different categories from bath products, hair products, scented candles and body products. People wear perfume for numerous reasons but it all comes down to smelling good and being happy. When you smell good, you feel good about yourself and in turn your self-esteem is boosted, so perfume is necessary on a daily basis.

Fragrances have the ability to make us feel desired, connect us with memories and help us show individuality. This boost of positive energy in our everyday life increases vitality, improves our drive to accomplish anything. With so many fragrances to choose from, a person can truly be original in what they decide to wear. You can change a scent to match your mood or occasion. You can smell like roses today then pomegranate the next day or even musk, as your preference changes.

How to wear perfume:

Perfume should be dabbed on: Whether you have a roll on perfume or a bottle without a mister, always dab it onto your chosen spots. Do not dab on one wrist then rub the wrists together, this crushes the scent. Perfume releases its scent through evaporation, so when you rub on it you increase the rate of evaporation, increasing heat resulting in the perfume smelling different than it would have without the rubbing. Let the perfume evaporate on its own.

Wear the perfume before getting dressed: When you apply perfume to your clothes, you risk staining your clothes and you don’t give off the aroma the way you should. Always find a way to apply the perfume on certain body parts or use the misting technique. Finding a safe and comfortable way to apply perfume to the skin will make it last longer.

Keep scented products within the same family: Perfumes are exciting and it’s easy to get carried away and create a confusion of scents. From a fruity body wash, cocobutter lotion then topped off with jasmine-scented perfume; different scents at once are a bad thing. If your favourite perfume doesn’t have its own bath products, you can use unscented products in the shower so that all scents don’t compete against each other.

Use the misting technique: Spray the perfume into the air in front of you, create a mist, and then walk through it. This will give your hair and body a light touch of the fragrance all over. You can do this undressed or even clothed. When using this technique your clothes do not get stained.

There are different types of perfumes and each one lasts for a different length of time depending on the concentration of oils.

When you need a scent that will last only for about an hour go for the “eau de colognes’’. When you are looking for a light perfume that can go up to two hours ‘‘eau de toilette’’ will work, but if you need a scent that will last from four-six and even more choose ‘‘l’eau de parfum’’. All bottles labelled as perfume last the longest.

To make your perfume last even longer than your lotion, apply a thin layer of Vaseline onto the areas you will dab on your perfume. It will evaporate slower than if it were applied onto your bare skin because Vaseline is not absorbed into skin. Do not leave your bottle of perfume in sunlight because this will change the aroma and cause it to smell bad. Do store perfumes in the refrigerator, it will keep the aroma fresh, if not possible then a cool, dark, dry area will do.

Have fun wearing perfume, choose a scent that complements your style and mood. The aroma of your perfume should fill your personal space so that whoever talks to you can sense it.
