THE National Peace and Reconciliation Commission has started establishing Provincial Peace Committees after conducting awareness workshops in some parts of the country.
Speaking in an interview at the sidelines of Human Rights and Reconciliation workshop organised by Zimbabwe Christian Alliance in Hwange last week, NPRC chairperson Retired Justice Selo Masole Nare said the awareness campaigns were a precursor to the establishment of the committees.

“Our reason for coming here was to establish contact with the locals towards the establishment of provincial committees.

“We have observed as a commission that people are eager for these committees as they will be close to our usefulness as well as theirs. So we took advantage of this meeting to meet the stakeholders, there is a lot that we can do, particularly for the community here and especially the complaints that we have received.

“We do hope we can step in and be able to contact the powers that be in order to reconcile the persons that are here,” said Justice Nare.

He said the commission had since engaged other communities in Matabeleland South where similar structures were established.

Justice Nare said the committees will act as an early warning unit of any impending conflict or forms of recurrence and will also assist in the dispute resolution methodologies as well as mediation processes.

Treasury recently gave NPRC the green light to recruit 32 people before the end of the year hence fully operationalising the commission that was gazetted into law in February.

The commission requires a staff establishment of 103 and recently launched its five-year strategic plan for the period 2018 to 2023.
