ZIFA Southern Region Division One contenders, Plumtree Chiefs, made light work of Division Three side, LG Vultures, to proceed to the quarter-finals of the inaugural edition of the Zifa Southern Region LG Foods Knockout Tournament in a match played at Raylton Sports Club yesterday afternoon.
Goals from Ray Lunga, Rainsome Pavari, Wallace Magalane and substitute Mkhululi Dube propelled the Bulawayo-based side to the next round of the $12 000 tourney.
The game started on an equal footing and although Chiefs were the more dominant side, LG managed to hold on and even create scoring chances that, however, went begging.
Chiefs’ broke LG’s resistance in the 26th minute when Lunga capitalised on a defensive blunder inside the box and blasted past Nedrick Madeya who was in between the posts for LG Vultures.
Chiefs’ assistant coach, Anzilom Ndlovu was happy with the win saying the boys played according to plan although they had intended scoring three goals in the first 25 minutes of the game.
LG Vultures coach Collin Nyambiya said the penalty put the game beyond their reach and he felt it should have been an offside decision instead. He, however, admitted Chiefs players were better than his and felt the game was a good learning curve for his charges.
LG Foods director Lawrence Gwati expressed satisfaction with the progression of the tourney although he was saddened by Technosphere’s withdrawal.
The Hwange side cited financial difficulties for not travelling.
“I think they were genuinely in a quandary and unfortunately I was not in a position to assist them with travel allowances. However, I believe we will see more good football as the tournament progresses,” he said.
