POLICE in Gwanda have launched a manhunt for suspected murderers who stabbed to death a local man whose body was found lying behind a nightspot in the early hours of last Saturday. The body of the 19-year-old, Washington Mukanya, a worker at Bina Mine in the town, was found with stab wounds at the back after being attacked by unknown assailants while coming from a beer binge at a local night club.

Matabeleland South police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele on Friday said police were looking for the assailants.

“No arrests have been made so far. Police are still investigating the matter and it is still premature for us to divulge more information as we might jeorpadise investigations,” he said.

Insp Ndebele said details surrounding the death of Mukanya were still sketchy as no one really knew what transpired leading to his death.

“What we know is that he was drinking beer at a nightclub in town with friends where an altercation ensued. They left the nightclub and went to the one where his body was found lying near with stab wounds. No one really knows what happened. The police are investigating the case,” he said.

Insp Ndebele appealed to members of the public to solve problems amicably and desist from resorting to violence which leads to unnecessary loss of life.

“If people have problems they should come to institutions like ZRP for counselling or approach churches and even elderly people in our society. The trend in our province is that people kill each other for petty issues. We urge them to solve their issues amicably without resorting to violence as it causes unnecessary loss of life,” said Insp Ndebele.

According to one of Mukanya’s friends, Lungisani Sibanda they were drinking until late at a nightclub in the Central Business District before they were chucked out after Mukanya had a fight with a man whom he referred to as Vodloza. He said Mukanya then proceeded to another night spot in Spitzkop where his body was later found lying behind the building with stab wounds.
