POLICE in Bulawayo have embarked on an anti-crime awareness campaign following a series of murder, armed robberies, theft and rape incidents that have been reported in the city since the beginning of the year.

Since January, the city has witnessed a series of violent crimes that has shaken residents with the recent one being alleged murders committed by Rodney Tongai Jindu who killed two of his friends in cold blood.

On Wednesday, the police embarked on anti-crime awareness campaigns visiting the city’s western suburbs educating residents on how they should handle themselves when securing their properties.

The campaign which was led by the officer commanding Bulawayo West District, Chief Superintendent Marshal Dube, also touched on issues of murder cases and rape where members of the public were told that every man was a potential rapist.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango said as police they were worried by the crimes being recorded in the city.

She said burglary, theft from vehicles, murders and plain and armed robberies were a concern to the police.

“We have witnessed a number of crime incidents since the beginning of the year. So we have partnered with the corporate world in conducting anti-crime awareness campaigns,” she said.

“We have witnessed a series of theft, theft from vehicles, robberies and murders that are of concern to us. Hence we hope the residents and the business community will take heed to our calls,” she said.

Insp Simango said some armed robberies could be avoided if business owners could increase the security at their premises.

“They should employ professional security personnel and deploy more than one officer especially in these large premises which can hardly be manned by an individual. Deploying more security officers to premises will deter robbers from pouncing onto such premises. But in most cases a single officer will be deployed in these large premises,” said Insp Simango.

She said residents should also avoid using path ways which have become bushy due to the grass and maize.

Insp Simango said the public should also avoid travelling alone at night as they become easy targets for robbers who can even kill them.

She said family and friends should also find peaceful ways of solving disputes as some disagreements have ended in tragedy.

Insp Simango said the public should desist from leaving their valuables inside their cars saying this make them easy targets for robbery and burglary.
