ONE of Zimbabwe’s most popular radio stations, Power FM has started broadcasting from Bulawayo as part of efforts to decentralise its operations. Although the station remains headquartered in Harare, some of its programmes will now be broadcast from the City of Kings. The first disc jockeys to broadcast from Bulawayo were Kudzai Mtunami (DJ Poshy) and Mthokozisi Ncube (DJ Emmity at the beginning of this month.

DJ Poshy told Sunday Leisure that the station is in town for the first time in response to the decentralisation of radio stations by the Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, Professor Jonathan Moyo.

“We have come to Bulawayo for the first time as we are taking a step towards the decentralisation of radio stations which was put forward by the minister,” said DJ Poshy.
DJ Poshy said the station will broadcast from Bulawayo everyday from 9pm to 12 midnight and will dwell more on electronic dance, hip-hop and house as their programmes are primarily targeted at the nine to 39 years age group.

“From 10-10.30pm I will be on air in the Connecting Zone where I will be connecting people, for instance those who had lost their business partners and so forth and thereafter DJ Emmity takes over in a programme called Night Signals,” she said.

DJ Poshy said they will soon recruit talented people to be part of the radio station in the next few months.
“We are going to recruit radio personnel here in Bulawayo and we are yet to call for auditions but it could be by the end of the year or beginning of 2015,” she said.
She urged Bulawayo artistes to up their game so that their music can find airplay on the radio station rather than just recording for the sake of it. “I encourage Bulawayo artistes to record quality songs for us to be able to play their music, music should be of quality, and the lyrics should be relevant, we cannot play vulgar songs on radio.

“Up and coming artistes from Bulawayo now that we are closer to them, must bring their music to Montrose Studios so that we can be able to listen to the tracks and if we are satisfied we will definitely play the songs,” she said.

The Power FM, formerly Radio 3, was based in Harare and moved to Gweru before being relocated to Harare.
