PRESIDENT Mnangagwa on Friday donated 50 computers to Mafungautsi Primary School in Gokwe during a rally that was held at an open space near the school.
Pledging the donation, President Mnangagwa said gone were the days when Gokwe should be regarded as a remote and backward area.
“I want teachers and pupils in this area to be in touch with technology. It should be the same for our children whether one is in Gokwe, or in Harare, technological advancement should be the same,” he said.
President Mnangagwa also pledged to ensure that the electricity was connected to the school.
“If there is no electricity, tell me the requirements and I will make sure that it is connected as soon as possible so that the computers start working and pupils benefit from them,” said President Mnangagwa.
He said the Government was committed to modernising the economy through infrastructure development programmes lined up including computerisation of the education sector and rural electrification among other programmes.
“As Government, we want our economy to be modernised. As the Government we are committed to upgrade our infrastructure like schools which should be electrified and computerised so that our pupils have equal access to technology.
There should be no difference between a child in Gokwe and the one in Harare or Bulawayo,” he said.
President Mnangagwa also said a programme was in place to ensure access to clean water by every citizen and rehabilitation of roads.
“I hear you have water challenges in Gokwe. The Government has a programme to ensure that everyone has access to clean water. We have engaged all our urban and rural councils for that programme so Gokwe is also set to benefit from the project.
“Our roads will also be rehabilitated under the same programme. We want Gokwe to be connected to every part of the country. I am aware that 50 percent of cotton produced in this country comes from this area, so we want to ensure that it is accessible,” he said.
Meanwhile, President Mnangagwa also handed over 100 blankets and five wheelchairs to Gokwe District Hospital sourced from NetOne.
“We want to thank NetOne for prioritising life and making this donation. It certainly going to improve the quality of service offered by the institution from now on. We cherish the benevolence and partnership with Government in improving service delivery,” said President Mnangagwa.
