THE Prince Edward High School Tigers roared their way past the Saint John’s College Rams in the concluding match of this year’s Dairibord Schools Rugby Festival played on packed PE’s Jubilee Field yesterday.

PE outscored St John’s College by six tries to two, with the Tigers converting four of their five pointers while the Rams never added any extras after scoring.

Saint John’s College were first to score with 10 minutes played, loosehead prop Travis Lindsay-White going over from a lineout only for first centre Trevor Smith to miss the conversion kick. PE put relentless pressure on the St John’s College goal line but great defence from the Rams saw them deny the Tigers a try.

PE managed their first try with 19 minutes played through flank Nigel Mpofu, flyhalf Tinotenda Savanhu weighing in with the two extra points for the conversion. A minute later, PE had their second try, right winger Russell Dinha planting the ball over the line, Savanhu again booting the conversion kick in to give the Tigers a 14-5 lead.

A great switch in play by the PE backline resulted in the third try, left winger Brian Matoramusha dotting the ball over the line with Savanhu’s conversion giving the Tigers a 21-5 halftime lead.

PE took just 50 seconds into the second half to record their fourth set of five points, second centre Shingirai Katsvere the scorer, Savanhu’s boots letting him down as his conversion kick went wide off the posts.

St John’s College picked up their second try 14 minutes into the second half, scoring far out on the left corner but the conversion was not over the posts.

Kasvere burst through to score the fifth try for the Tigers with five minutes to play, planting the ball on the far left corner, Savanhu’s kick not successful.

Matoramusha rounded off the Rams defence to score the sixth try for the Tigers just before the end, Savanhu’s conversion making it 38-10 and that is how it ended.

Earlier in the day, Falcon College edged Peterhouse 18-15 to finish the festival unbeaten while Churchill ended the tournament with no win after they went down 24-21 to St George’s College.

PE captain Kudakwashe Ndoro was voted the best first team player while Caroline Matenga from George Staark took the honours in the female section. The two youngsters will travel to South Africa to watch a Super Rugby match with all the expenses associated with the trip paid for by DHL.

Matches were played throughout the week at five grounds at PE and one field at neighbouring Allan Wilson. It was the fixtures played on the Jubilee Field on Tuesday, Thursday and yesterday which attracted the highest number of spectators.

In total 186 schools took part with Livingstone Kolobeng College of Botswana the only foreign team at this year’s fiesta.
