A PRIVATE schools select soccer team left for Zambia on Friday afternoon to attend an Independent Schools of Zambia (ISAZ) tournament.
The representative side was selected at the Conference of Heads of Independent Schools in Zimbabwe (CHISZ) tournament hosted by St John’s College last weekend, which attracted 13 schools.

These included St John’s College, Gateway, Falcon College, Kyle College, St Georges College, Hillcrest College, Goldridge College, Lomagundi College, Westridge College, Midlands Christian College, Watershed College, Peterhouse and South Eastern College.

Initially 25 students were selected, however, the squad was trimmed to 16 due to financial constraints.

Ephraim Muswerakuenda, the head of delegation disclosed that some parents had come on board to assist the team meet some their expenses.

“We are grateful to parents who helped by contributing financially towards the trip as the corporate sector has not been forthcoming, however we are hopeful that we will see a major boost from them in next year’s tournament,” he said.

The tournament in Zambia, which ironically is the brainchild of Muswerakuenda, is the first of its kind. However, invited countries like Botswana and Malawi declined to send their teams saying they were invited at short notice.

Muswerakuenda, who is a geometric and design teacher at Lomagundi College, said the purpose of the tourney was to bring together private institutions within Southern Africa through the game of football.

The tournament featuring CHISZ, ISAZ and Ndola schools select, started yesterday with the final match expected to take place today.
