Average dam water levels in the country now stand at 58,4 percent, after most recorded major gains during the on-going wet spell being experienced across the country, the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) has said.

Zimbabwe is forecast to receive normal to above normal rainfall this season, and these have been falling persistently since the beginning of the year, causing flooding in some areas.

In an update on dam levels, Zinwa acting corporate communications and marketing manager, Tsungirirai Shoriwa said the current national average had increased from 50,4 percent recorded last week.

This represented an almost 20 percent increase in the national average since the beginning of the rainy season when the national average was 39,1 percent.

“Some of the major dams are now full with Khami, Wenimbi, Insukamini, Tuli Makwe, Mundi-Mataga, Nyadire and Harava being some of the ones that are already full,” he said.

“Most of the places that were in danger after their water supply dams ran dry last year are now safe as the dams now have sufficient water to meet their needs. These include Mt Darwin, Kotwa, Mutawatawa and Mutoko.”

Shoriwa said major rises were also recorded in dams such as Chivero in the Manyame catchment area which rose by 25,3 percent to reach 91,6 percent of capacity, Whitewaters Dam in the Sanyati catchment was now 83 percent full after rising by 47, 9 percent.

He said some dams still had low water levels, citing Mazowe, which had not recorded any rise in its water level.

“Mazowe Dam has finally recorded a 1,7 percent increase rising to 7,3 percent while Mutirikwi Dam has also recorded an increase and is now 9,4 percent full.”
