OLD Mutual Tag Rugby Trust educator Wonder Nakamu has commended the progress of the rugby development initiative, saying a lot of positive community changes have been made by the organisation.

Speaking after the end of tag rugby league games in Gweru last Wednesday, Nakamu said he was impressed by the development that has been made by the tag rugby schools for their communities.

“A lot of community changes have been made by the initiative through the clean up community programmes that we conducted last week in our respective areas and these outreach programmes include cleaning the houses of the elderly people, picking up litter in selected areas,” he said.

Nakamu praised the discipline and the energy possessed by the tag rugby participants despite the cold weather which is prevailing at this time of the year.

“Ranging from the coaches to the player, the energy which is found in the Tag Rugby Trust is just so amazing. The students are willing to learn a lot of new things while they are also eager to help in the development of the communities as witnessed by the maximum effort that they put in the community projects.

He went on to say, “What makes their effort extra special is that they have managed to do all this in the cold weather that we have nowadays.”

Participating schools use their community club names in the programme. In Bulawayo, Tigers lead the log standings after week three with 25 points while Bulldogs are second on 24 points. Sogwala Primary Schools top the league in Gweru with 28 points and second to them is Makulambila. Halas lead the way in Plumtree with 33 points with second placed Sharks on 28 points.

The Old Mutual Tag Rugby Trust is a rugby development programme which runs for nine weeks and its aim is not just to teach children rugby but to also make them responsible people who are able to bring a positive impact to their community. It runs under the motto “building futures through rugby”.
