THE Salvation Army Church in Zimbabwe yesterday celebrated 125 years of existence in the country with a colourful flag ceremony that was held in Bulawayo.
The Minister of State for Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Cde Nomthandazo Eunice Moyo who was represented by the District Administrator for Umguza Ms Beaula Gwaze said she was honoured to have the province taking part in the celebrations.

“Throughout the years of existence since 1891, I realise the Salvation Army has grown and has accomplished many projects in the city. You have seen the gaps that are there in our society and taken it upon yourselves to complement Government efforts and we are grateful for that,” she said.

Cde Moyo said the Salvation Army has remarkable footprints in its journey in Zimbabwe as the church has built schools, clinics, churches and social homes for the destitute population.

She said in this journey, the church has managed to fulfill the Zim Asset clusters of providing social services to the people and employment creation.
“As a province we are delighted that you have built boarding schools and several primary and secondary schools. I am proud to mention that as a church you did not end there but went further to fulfill the infrastructure and utilities cluster where you were seen drilling boreholes to alleviate the shortage of water,” said Cde Moyo.

The divisional commander for Matabeleland, Major Joseph Mudyanenzara, said they were celebrating 125 years and have come a long way considering that the church started off with a handful of people but has spread its wings all over the country.

“Our core business is to preach the word and we want to assist where ever possible to aid communities that are troubled. We intend to do more. We started off small but we have come to be a formidable force,” said Major Mudyanenzara.

The flag ceremony, he said, was a commemoration of their 125 years of existence. The church’s flag was hoisted in Harare, Manicaland, Masvingo, Bulawayo and will today move to Hwange.

The church is celebrating under the theme, “Jehovah our Strength” and its congregants are proud to say that they have managed to stay as one unit since inception.

Renowned musician Mr Mechanic Manyeruke, also a member of the church was at the ceremony and composed the theme song for the grand ceremony which will be held in Harare in September.

Minister Moyo also pointed out that the Salvation Army has embarked on livestock restocking project where communities are given cattle and goats.
