FORMER Miss Tourism Zimbabwe, Samantha Tshuma, has taken yet another step to help the local modelling industry by launching a model of the year pageant which will see many models getting recognised on international forums.

The launch is to take place at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) on 23 December.

The event has been a collective effort where Tshuma has partnered with various renowned local companies in fulfilling the transformational move in the modelling industry.

Speaking in an interview the pageant’s communications director, Ntando Ndlovu said the model of the year pageant was the brainchild of Tshuma who then shared the idea with a selected group of people who today stand as the event production team.

“The whole concept was originally mooted by former Miss Tourism Zimbabwe, Samantha Tshuma who then shared it with a selected group of corporates and individuals who went on to help develop it into something tangible. The event’s production team is made up of five reputable Bulawayo companies, namely Open-Eye studio, KBM Agency, AM Modelling Agency, Vootograph and Gourmet Eats,” Ndlovu said.

“These prominent companies are also founding partners and main organisers of this extraordinary event and they have been working tirelessly to make the event a success,” he said.

The main sponsors are Outre as the hair partner while international designer John Ablaza will come in as sponsor for the main prize winners.

Ndlovu said he was optimistic that the launch was going to provide a unique platform for Zimbabwean models as it would offer a whole new dimension and a fulfilment of dreams for the models and designers who would benefit from the project.

“Indeed, I believe this extraordinary show will take models to greater heights as among other prizes, our winning model and designer will be afforded a rare opportunity to work with internationally acclaimed designer, John Ablaza for a full year. We want the models to experience a whole new dimension into modelling while working with him as we believe he has a lot to offer as he has showcased at some biggest platforms including New York fashion week,” said Ndlovu.

He added that they intend on growing the model of the year brand into an international brand, which would see different countries hosting their own version of the show.

The event is set to be done on an annual basis and designed to celebrate and appreciate the local modelling industry.

“Our ultimate goal is to add value to the industry and contribute towards its growth by providing a platform that rewards models and designers for the hard work put during the year, while also opening them up to international opportunities that will enhance and grow their individual brands. It is set to be an annual première to celebrate the modelling industry,” he said.

Ndlovu said the day would be characterised by a runway styled show featuring a number of models showcasing the work of five designers.

A panel of judges would then decide on the winning models and designer at the end of the show.

The pageant, he said, was set in a way that people would get an opportunity to mix and mingle with one another.

“Before the event a cocktail mixer set up at the venue will give our audience an opportunity to mix and mingle with some of the country’s leading fashion gurus and influencers,” he said.
