EVERY person is unique in their own way. Decorating or designing your own home is the only way to express one’s uniqueness. One’s personality should be reflected by the way your home is decorated. Personality is the combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual’s distinctive character. Thus, make your home a place that you truly call your own, one that reflects your personality and where you find comfort and relaxation.

This week’s column will tackle some of the ways of decorating your home for your personality.

Paintings and framed photos are a way of reflecting one’s personality. One way of ensuring neatness as well as uniqueness is grouping your paintings at one place-but avoid overdoing it. Make sure that you hang paintings as well as photos that you and your family never get tired of looking at. Display photos of your family, friends and even pictures from the magazine that you like. At the same time coherence should always take priority in your design choice.

Your interests and leisure pursuits can serve as great decorative pieces — things that reflect your hobbies. For example some people are fond of flowers; include home décor that is flower inspired. It can be souvenirs from your favourite flowers placed around your house or have cuttings of pictures your wall. If your interest is music, include home décor that is music inspired. It can be a musical group that you like.

Colour is one of the simple ways that can add your personality to your home. This can be the focal point of a room or can just be accents to make the room feel more like you. If you like brown, you can have a brown couch in your living room or a brown rug. If you like a bright colour, you will be drawn to bright colours which reflect your cheerful character. As for those who are quiet and calm they will be drawn to colours that have calm and soft tones.

Your home should be a place where you can feel relaxed and simply just be yourself. The easiest way to do this is by adding pillows, a throw or a comfortable couch in your room.
