FOR the second year running house music artiste, DJ Skaiva will contest for the right to be crowned the best house music DJ in the country at the upcoming Zimbabwe Music Awards (Zima). This time he will hope to bring the crown home after last year’s disappointment, but he will face stiff competition from TKP, Squash, Defined House and J Dot.

The fresh faced artiste is gradually becoming a respected house music DJ as his hit track Sweet Jesus that was featured in South Africa’s DJ QT’s album Quantized 7 was a Best House Single contender at the South African Metro FM awards.

DJ Skaiva’s other song, Day dreamer, stayed on YFM’s top charts for a consecutive three weeks. The track topped the charts of other radio stations in South Africa, proving that the Lupane State University graduate is big down South.

Skaiva told Sunday Leisure that although he was not that popular in his home country, he was confident that his music was taking root in the land sandwiched by the Limpopo and Zambezi rivers.

“I believe I am slowly being recognised in showbiz, although it is still at ground zero. I believe there is significant progress. I have also managed to get more gigs as I am fully booked this December and it shows that people are now appreciating my music,” he said.

Last year, the Zima award went to veteran DJ, Khukeni “Khuxxman” Bethule.

“I believe I can scoop the award this year. Yes there is stiff competition but I believe that I will make it this time,” he said.

Skaiva is also well received in Southern Africa. His song Godobori that he collaborated with Mzoe 7 is constantly played on Botswana’s BTV.
