SPORTS and Recreation Commission chairman Edward Siwela has congratulated the Zimbabwe national cricket team for booking a place in the Super Six stage of the International Cricket Council Cricket World Cup Qualifier currently taking place in the country.

Zimbabwe booked their place in the next stage of the tournament after an 89-run victory over Hong Kong at Queens Sports Club on Saturday which saw them with three out three group matches. Siwela said the team’s qualification for the Super Six is an indication that that the team was in the right direction to make it next year’s World Cup to be played in England.

“The Chairman of the Sports and Recreation Commission, Board members, Management and Staff of the SRC would like to heartily congratulate the Cricket National Team the Chevrons for reaching the Super Six of the International Cricket Council World Qualifier which is  currently being hosted in Harare, Bulawayo and Kwekwe. This is a step in the right direction given that we need to qualify for the World Cup which is scheduled to take place next year in England,’’ Siwela said.

The SRC boss urged the Graeme Cremer led Chevrons to keep focused as the whole country is behind them and restlessly wanting them to qualify for the World Cup.

“Now that you have reached the Super Six stage, our message to you is that, keep the eyes on the ball and it’s not yet time to take off the foot off the accelerator pedal for the journey is still on. The nation is now awaiting anxiously with hope that you will sail through this stage and be one of the two teams which will proceed to the World Cup. As the SRC, we are confident that you will make us proud by qualifying for the world which is pinnacle of Cricket and this will take your cricketing career to another level,” Siwela said.

Zimbabwe take on Scotland in their final group fixture at Queens Sports Club on Monday before heading off to Harare for the Super Six. The top two teams at the end of the Super Six will clash in the final at Harare Sports Club on 25 March with those countries assured of a ticket to England.
