KUDZAI Mpangi, a Lupane State University student on attachment at Sunday News has won the Best Print Journalist Award for consistent coverage of original, high quality, youthful content that expresses youths as positive drivers in their community.

The awards ceremony was held in Harare last Thursday sponsored by Youth Empowerment and Transformational Trust (YETT). YETT is a youth networking organisation committed to the full participation of young people in sustainable development through advocacy and capacity building of youth organisations in Zimbabwe. It has over the past four years acknowledged journalists in diverse media that creatively express youths as agents of social change in the community.

It has engaged a massive publicity of the Youth Voice awards reaching out to more than 800 journalists drawn from areas like Bulawayo, Harare and Masvingo.

YETT Programmes Officer Samantha Moyo said the winners were selected by an independent panel of consultants from journalists who displayed material that seeks to portray youths as positive drivers of social change. She also encouraged massive reporting from female journalists in the media.

“I don’t know, maybe journalism is a difficult job for females because you find out that only 39 percent of coverage is from females and the rest are male journalists. We encourage that more females participate in the reporting so we can have equal reporting,” Moyo said.

Moyo also paid tribute to all the participants who managed to report positively about youths.

“We would like to thank all those who reported and continue reporting for us even though some did not make it there is always another time as this is an annual event that is ongoing,” she said.

Mpangi is one of the journalists who won an award drawn from print, online, broadcast and community online.

Among the people who scooped an award was Hazvinei Mwanaka from Daily News who took the Best Award for Print Media in Harare, Nyasha Musambasi Best Community Journalist from The Mirror, TellZim won as an organisation.

“We are impressed with Kudzai’s work as she managed to cover six stories within a short space of one month. The stories that she reported on were in line with what we as an organisation are looking for, especially the story she did on a young poet, it showed a positive presentation of youths,” Moyo said.

Mpangi said she was humbled by the award.

“I’m so honoured with this award. It is a dream come true for me, especially considering that I’m a student on attachment. This award will go a long way as I will continue reporting on stories in line with youths being the positive drivers of the community.

“I would like to give thanks to YETT team for recognising my work out of all the journalists in the country as well as the Sunday News team for guidance and support. I would also like to give thanks to my family for their continued support through this entire journey,” she added.-@kayskudzai
