LOCAL tennis player, Nigel Ncube left the country last Friday to take up a scholarship at Judson University in the United States of America where he hopes to develop into even a better player.
The 22-year-old Ncube, a member of the Zenzo Ndlovu-coached Elite Tennis Village based at Whitestone Primary School will be studying for a degree in Accounting and Finance during the four years he will be at Judson.
In announcing Ncube’s signing, the university’s men as well as women tennis coach, Chris Moment said he was looking forward to having the Bulawayo lad contribute on and off the court at the university.
“We are excited to have Nigel join our team in the Fall and look forward to his accomplishments on and off the court,’’ Moment said.
Ncube expressed his delight at the opportunity to become a better tennis player with his quest being to contribute to Judson University’s success.
“It’s quite exciting because it’s something that I have been working on for quite a long time so I feel blessed that they have actually considered offering me a scholarship. As a player, I will be taking part in the men’s tennis, hopefully I can win more matches for them and be a better player for them,’’ Ncube said.
Over the years, Ncube has represented Bulawayo at the National Youth Games and also turned out for Zimbabwe schools. His aim is to get called up for Davies Cup duty for Zimbabwe in the coming years.
“I am going out there just to gain the experience and exposure to develop myself to become a better player, hopefully represent Zimbabwe in the Davies Cup,’’ he said.
Nigel’s younger brother, Hillary is also in the USA on a tennis scholarship at Point University, having left the country at the beginning of last year.
