SOME of the country’s top runners will take to the track at the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe Track and Field Championships at White City Stadium today.

Manuel Mpofu, the Bulawayo Athletics board chairman said the competitors will be representing their clubs with the biggest attraction being the Coca-Cola Four Minute Mile Challenge qualifier. So far, the Bulawayo trio of Trust Chidomaya, Dumo Mkhwananzi and Willard Mutasa has qualified for the semi-finals to be held at White City Stadium a day before the actual race at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair Main Arena on 29 April.

“The athletes are coming from clubs from all over the country, the major event is Coca-Cola Four Mine Miler Challenge qualifier.

All track and field events will be there, except pole vault. Some of the top athletes we are expecting are Wellington Varevi from Harare who runs 10 000m, 5 000m and Chidomaya who runs 10 000m. Most of the athletes are now preparing for the PPC 33 Miler. Even up-and-coming athletes are competing as they prepare for school athletics, Prince Edward have confirmed they are coming,’’ said Mpofu.

He added that today’s competition will also be used to select provincial teams for the National Youth Games as well as inter-provincials in Harare in May. Even more motivation is for the athletes to attain qualifying times for the various competitions in the year which include the Southern region senior championships in June.
