REMEMBER when you had to be stick thin to be considered model material, bikini worthy and even sexy? Well, those days seem to be fading away as having curves is the new normal. Hitting the gym twice a day, no starch diet, weight loss pills, slimming teas and drinking apple cider vinegar; all for trying to look a certain way which society deem is perfect. Meeting old friends and the first thing they say is “wow you have put on weight”, but are you supposed to look the way you did six years ago? Not anymore.

Right now, size diversity is everywhere. Recently magazines such as Sports illustrated, Ebony, have been celebrating the spectrum of size with cover shoots featuring celebrities such as Jazmine Sullivan, Chrisette Michele, Danielle Brooks, and Gabi Fresh. Popular culture suggests that we’re moving beyond size activism towards a place of size being normal. We are not saying fat-shaming is obsolete or people won’t stop passing comments, or that the fashion industry has fully accepted these changes or has undergone a body positive revolution. Plus-size people and those whose bodies present as “thick” or “curvy” have become more comfortable in their curves, setting this trend on fire. Some have even gone under the knife to get these curves.

On the consumer side, shopping while not skinny has become significantly easier over the last half-decade. Many boutique brands now cater to plus-size people. Bloggers and Instagram-famous plus-size models are getting a lot of attention and they seem to be representing the thick girls in a good light. As if they are saying “yes, I’m not skinny but I’m sexy and proud of the way I look”. Fashion designers and stylists have also been showing support by designing and making the thick girls look va-va-voom on the red carpet events and day-to-day activities.

We are not saying slim women do not have body problems but when it comes to clothes and dressing up there is always a variety of clothes to choose from. On the other hand when you are a curvy girl you can’t just wear skinnies and a vest without looking like a sausage. Majority of African women are curvy that’s just the way it is, but when society says stick-thin is trendy we all want to look skinny, now that that the Black Chynas and Ambers have surfaced, suddenly we all want to look that way.

We have been blessed with curves from the onset but it took Nicki Minaj to convince us to accept curves and start wearing pumped up undies. Lol.

Ten years ago it was impossible to style for plus people unless you styled from a (personal) wardrobe, it’s so exciting to have choice now when shopping. You don’t have to be one kind of person wearing the same typa’ clothes daily. Plus-size doesn’t mean one-size-fits-all, and that plus-size designers must consider vast differences in shape and circumference when creating clothes.

Curvy bodies are being reclaimed by the people who possess them, and now, more than ever, different body sizes are sources of strength, not ridicule, shame or stress. If a person is happy, healthy, beautiful, fashionable, and potentially successful that’s all that matters, right! Do eat healthily, exercise, doll up and dress to slay. Fashion is for everyone but of late the thick girls are trending so there definitely various fashions in store.
