make up

I’M yet to come across a woman who doesn’t want to look and feel beautiful.

I mean, every woman wants to walk down the street and turn some heads, right?

In fact, to be beautiful is the birthright of every woman, like the famous perfumer Elizabeth Arden rightly said.

Make-up has assumed the role of “woman’s best friend” which a significant number of ladies have come to rely on.

Most will not even leave the house without a little powder or lipstick — they want to enhance their beauty. It’s an excellent accessory if utilised well. Make-up is meant to enhance your facial features — don’t use it to destroy yourself.

There’s no need to drench in it or use it to make yourself look a shade lighter!

Your face and how you decide to “dress” it are an important aspect of your everyday life because it’s the first port of call when you come into contact with people. It’s your billboard — it matters what you apply on it and how you do it.

You need to understand why you’re wearing make-up, if you don’t — this is when disaster happens. We all have different skin tones and textures so our make-up needs are different.

Before you start applying anything, ask yourself if you’re trying to cover up some acne, you’ve uneven skin tone or darkness around the eye — whatever the scenario, know your reasons for wearing make-up.

When you see women out there looking a little crazy in their make-up, it’s because they don’t understand why they are doing what they’re doing. They’re some people that don’t need foundation; just some concealer under the eye, around the nasal fold and a little bit of powder, lip gloss and mascara to lift the eye and it’s done.

Concealer is used to brighten up the face and “conceal” certain dark patches which drag down the face. Highlighter is used on the brow bone just to give the eye a lift.

Foundation should be put only on areas needed. If you’re not wearing foundation to cover something, you’re wearing it to highlight. Remember to test the foundation first before you actually buy it. There’s a difference between a highlighter and a concealer. Your concealer and foundation should be the same pigment as your skin so that it blends.

Please ladies, be very honest with yourself and get the right shade. Nothing looks as hideous as a yellow bone looking face and charcoal hands and feet! But, the highlighter should be three shades lighter than your skin.

The brow is a big one when it comes to doing your face. That’s when women’s different “drawing” abilities come out.

Not everybody was born with a perfect brow so to enhance their features, they try to mix it up a little but it doesn’t quite come out right between the tweezing and “drawing” them in.

Ladies, you need to see a professional who will understand your eyes and the shape of your brow to get this done.

Some of you will only need to trim a little off while others will have to learn to pencil them in properly. Mascara is important as it brings out the eyes because they’re sunken most times.

Black people have curlier lashes, making it difficult to put in the mascara but instead of using the whole brush, just use the tip of the brush, from the inside going out.

If your eyes are really small, don’t wear liner under the eye because you’ll end up with dark circles under the eye but if you have massive eyes, you definitely can put on some liner.

If your eyes are small, you probably want to wear liner on top of the eye or use white or brown liner.

But there’s a disaster with lashes.

People watch Beyoncé and think they want lashes like hers but don’t understand she needs longer lashes to be visible on stage.

I’d stay away from fake lashes if I were you!

Matching eye shadow and clothes is so 1980s. If you’re matching everything, it makes you look cheap, especially on the brow bone. Shimmer is not advised around the brow bone in the day time and especially at work.

Lip stains are the new convenient way of keeping the lips plush. You put the lip stain on, lipstick over it and it’ll last the whole day.

You certainly don’t need liner over your lipstick — this is meant for people that done have a lip!

There’s no prescribing what lip colour to wear — it’s a personality thing. Whether you go for a bright red or a nude lip is entirely up to you.
