VICE-PRESIDENT Phelekezela Mphoko has urged the newly appointed Minister of State for Matabeleland South Ambassador Aaron Maboyi Ncube to work with the local leadership to spur development in the province.

This was after Amb Maboyi Ncube, in his welcome remarks during the commemorations of the International Day for Older Person in Gwanda on Thursday, insinuated that his predecessors did nothing to develop the province, hence Matabeleland South was the poorest province.

VP Mphoko had come to officiate at the event which was organised by the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare under its new Minister Cde Patrick Zhuwao.

“It is rare for this province to be blessed by the hierarchy of the leadership. It’s because Matabeleland South is looked at lowly. There’s little development here Honourable VP. We appeal to you to adopt us so that we develop. There’s so much back biting in this province. Irresponsible interests and this is being done by chicaneries.

“I hope with your guidance things will be alright. I know that you have the capacity. Having been in the international community helped me see we need to develop and resources must benefit the province and the country as a whole. Unfortunately I am still new. With these words I welcome you to the province,” said Amb Maboyi Ncube.

After he had finished VP Mphoko had a word of advice.

He said: “I was supposed to be in Mutare and I said let me come here since there are two new ministers. We know that as black people we have a problem of developing. This office has been occupied by Mark Dube, Steven Nkomo then came Angeline Masuku and Ncube (Abednego). For a person to say that, it’s very deadly, especially a person who is coming into office.

“All these people have been there, Ncube is still fresh, Gwanda is big. These people have programmes they left. Take it from where Ncube (Abednego) left. It is very important to have a good relationship with everyone for the development of Matabeleland South;” said VP Mphoko.

He went on to say the province was the richest in the country.

“We have rich gold reserves in Mphoengs and the richest diamond deposits which will take 300 years to extract. The province is also a viable corridor for people coming up and down Sadc. Ncube (Maboyi) talk to your colleague Ncube (Abednego) and hear and liaise. Work together, it’s not for individual people but should benefit the country. This is above positions, bring everybody together, even local MPs. This is a challenge. A big one. If you take this position for prestige you are doomed,” he said.

The commemorations were held under the theme “Stepping into the future: Tapping the talents contributions and participation of older persons in society”

VP Mphoko also donated 30 tonnes of rice, 25 boxes of cooking oil and 10 bales of clothes to the elderly people of Gwanda.
