LOWER Gweru is set to host to the inaugural Vungu MP Challenge Tournament that will see over 30 teams gather for a sporting extravaganza involving different disciplines on Tuesday.

Zanu-PF candidate (MP)  for Vungu, Omega Sibanda is set to the launch the event that is expected to bring the people of Lower Gweru together. Sibanda, who is also Zifa vice-president and former Highlanders committee member, said the event will see teams battle it out in football, netball, volleyball and tug of war.

He added the event is set to be a regular feature on the calendar as he seeks to unearth talent within the area. Sibanda said early closure of schools will see various school tournaments being cancelled hence the Vungu MP Challenge will give community members a chance to gather and socialise.

“Sports play a crucial role in bringing people together and I am aware that people were eager to watch schools battle it out so this tournament will give them a chance to watch a different sporting spectacle. I will fully sponsor the event which will have a host of prizes that include trophies, medals, uniforms and balls. These will be an incentive for sporting excellence among the various participants,” he said.

Sibanda said several football legends that include Zenzo Moyo, Ronald “Gidiza” Sibanda and Johannes Ngodzo, among others will grace the event. He said transport will be provided for both spectators and participants to the event that will be held at Maboleni, Lower Gwelo.

Area zones teams from the 11 wards and 26 districts in the area will battle it out for the top prizes. Sibanda urged top tier teams based in the province to attend the gala and scout for talent.

“Many a times we miss harnessing real talent because we are focusing on players based in urban areas only but I believe in rural areas we can find real gems. I am a sporting person, so I would love to see talent being given the chance to shine,” he said.

Sibanda urged community members to attend in their numbers saying it will be a family outing that will kick off at 8am in the morning and end in the late afternoon. Entertainment will be provided by award winning Iyasa and other groups.
