AN Umguza woman allegedly dumped her five-month-old baby at Khami Maximum Prison after accusing her husband, who works at the facility, of being irresponsible, a court heard.

Bonani Nkomo (23) reportedly abandoned her baby at the prison to fix her husband, Cornwell Chigova.
Chigova narrated the incident before magistrate Ms Evelyn Mashavakure in a bid to acquire a protection order against his wife.

“Your worship, she has been insulting me in front of my friends and workmates demanding money for the child’s medication yet the child is receiving free medication from the health facilities at my work,” he said.

“She was always threatening to dump the baby at my workplace saying I am an irresponsible father yet I am paying maintenance for the child. I am asking that she may be prohibited from coming to my work premises because I am no longer comfortable.”

The magistrate said she could not bar his wife from entering the premises after the wife indicated that she has a relative staying at Khami prison.

“I will only order her to stop the verbal abuse towards you since you said she was insulting you in front of your friends and workmates,” she said.

Nkomo, however, denied the allegations and told the court that she did not dump the baby.

She told the court that she only phoned Chigova in the middle of the night telling him that the baby was sick and needed immediate medical attention.

“Your Worship, I did not get time to go to Khami for medication so I went to see a doctor and I still have the receipts for the prescriptions. My baby needed medical attention immediately,” she said.

“The fact that he says I dumped my baby at his workplace is what hurts me most because I never did such thing. I always go there with the baby because I have a relative there. If I wanted to dump the baby I was going to do it long back because this man did not even do anything for the child.”

She told the court that she did confront her husband but did not abandon the baby.
