THE Zimbabwe senior women’s national cricket team leaves the country on Tuesday for a four nation tournament in Gaborone, Botswana. Coached by Trevor Phiri, the Zimbabwean women will square off against their counterparts from Botswana, Namibia and Mozambique in a 40 over event which runs from Friday up to Sunday at the Botswana Cricket Association Oval.

Team manager Caroline Nyamande said they selected the team during a franchise tournament staged recently in Harare and the matches in Botswana will serve as preparation for the International Cricket Council World Twenty20 African qualifiers in Uganda in December.

In Botswana, Zimbabwe have two practice matches, the first against the Botswana Unde-16 boys team in a Twenty20 match on Wednesday and a 40 over contest against the Botswana women’s team the following day.

The Zimbabwean women were last in international action last month against Botswana in a seven match Twenty20 series staged in the neighbouring country where they won all the matches.

Some of the outstanding players in the Zimbabwean team are up and coming all rounder Tasmeen Granger, who recently spent time in the United States of America where she represented Can-Am United in the annual Atlanta Women Twenty20 tournament.

Wicketkeeper Ashley Burdett has retired which has seen the captaincy being handed over to all rounder Precious Marange.
