THE Zimbabwe Institute of Management is set to establish a tertiary institution that will offer modules that are especially designed by the organisation to produce excellent managers and business people. In an interview on the sidelines of an end of year dinner held in Bulawayo last week ZIM president, Mr Isaac Kwesu, said significant progress on the initiative was likely to be seen in two years.

“We have a special mandate to set up a university subsidiary and the project is expected to have made significant progress in the next coming two years. We intend to offer modules that will produce excellent managers,” he said.

Mr Kwesu said the institution also aimed to serve neighbouring countries.

“So far we have extended our footprints to neighbouring countries like Malawi and Botswana hence once the institution is established, we are likely to have other countries knocking on our doors in search of training services,” he said.

Mr Kwesu also said the organisation had set its eyes on chartering and certifying managers and leaders.

“We are the leading voice in management excellence hence in future we will be training, assessing and certifying managers. ZIM has high standards and therefore it will inevitably be the first choice for national and possibly regional assessment of excellent managers,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bulawayo businessman, Mr Clemence Kunzekweguta, who was the guest of honour at the dinner said business leaders must exhaust opportunities and desist from the culture of blaming external factors for the failure of their ventures.

“Business leaders should borrow from the parable of talents which is found in the holy book as this parable can be easily applicable in our organisations and even at national level.

If we fail to tap from our talents and continue to blame external factors we will not only fail to grow but even the little that we have will be taken from us,” he said.

Mr Kunzekweguta said the inability to deal with ambiguity and uncertainty by business leaders was among the challenges faced by many companies.

“In my view the highest attribute or quality leadership is about adding value when the situation becomes vague, ambiguous and uncertain.

“Business leadership is about embracing ambiguity, taking calculated risks that may even disrupt existing business models and leapfrogging beyond tried and tested management styles.

“As business leaders we need to be alert on several fronts,” he said.

Mr Kunzekweguta also encouraged parallel thinking as opposed to linear and serial thinking as a tool that deals more pro-actively with managing ambiguity and uncertainty.

“Good strategic thinking precedes formal planning and it starts with clear and honest perceptions in those who have the ability to think on several levels at once.”

Mr Kunzekweguta urged business leaders to allow their managers and workers to be innovative and bring down those barriers of communication and unnecessary hierarchy.

“Develop a culture of questioning the status quo in your organisations; everyone should have an insatiable quest to always improve their product, service or the way they do things and instil confidence in their subordinates,” he said .

ZIM chief executive officer, Mr Charles Changara, said the event was held to provide a platform to exchange views in critical areas including the problems that affect the economy.

“It is very important for clients and members to network hence this dinner is an annual event to ensure they keep up to date with what is happening in the business world,” he said.

Mr Changara also said it was important for business leaders to understand the needs of the market hence the dinner was a platform which was used to assess the market.

“People in the game of business require constant assessment of the market so as to know the direction the business should take. It also helps them plan and make effective decisions for the business,” he said.
