LOCAL rugby fans are in for a treat when the Zimbabwe rugby legends take on their South African counterparts at Falcon College in Esigodini next month.

Yesteryear rugby greats from the neighbouring countries will play as curtain raisers to the eagerly anticipated Falcon College and Peterhouse match, one of the biggest schoolboy fixtures in the country.

The fixture between the greats from Zimbabwe and South Africa began in 2013 at Hartsfield Rugby Ground as celebration of the stadium’s 75th anniversary. From there it became annual until it did not take place last year.
Gregory Friend, the stand in chairman of Zimbo Rugby Legends Association said fans have an opportunity to meet some of those who put up splendid performances for the two countries during their best days.

“A treat for rugby lovers is in store for Matabeleland once again as the South African Rugby legends will travel across the border to face the Zimbo Rugby legends, an annual fixture which has gained popularity among players and supporters alike, giving the supporters a chance to cheer on their countrymen, rub shoulders with world cup winners,’’ Friend said.

Some of the former Zimbabwe international players who have confirmed their participation are Paul Staak, Tafadzwa Chinyani, Lloyd Turner, Justin Buchanan, Dave Walters and Jafet Ndebele.

Friend said the South Africa legends, who arrive in the country on 20 July and depart 22 July, will hold a coaching programme at Falcon College on the morning of the 21 July as part of “giving back” and passing on their knowledge and skill to the next generation. The South Africans have their training sessions pencilled for Christian Brothers College.

While in Zimbabwe, the South Africans will be hosted by Falcon College, Bulawayo Club and the Hartsfield Trust. Friend said some of the sponsors for the match are Zapalala Supermarket, Carbon Processors and John Pocock.

The Zimbabwean legends have lost all the four previous matches against the South Africans and will look for a positive result this time around.
