THE Zimbabwe National Army yesterday handed over a dormitory block to Usher High School in Figtree, following a request by the school for assistance.
In a speech read on his behalf by Major-General Trust Mugoba, the ZNA commander, Lieutenant-General Phillip Valerio Sibanda, said it is the army’s mandate to aid the school since they are sensitive to the needs of the girl child.

“In line with the Government policy which seeks to develop the girl child’s education with an ultimate objective of economically empowering her alongside her male counterpart, the ZNA duly accepted the request,” said Lt-Gen Sibanda.

The construction of the block addressed the girls’ accommodation plight by decongesting them from their current dormitories and by so doing created a conducive environment for their studies. The conducive environment, Lt-Gen Sibanda said, motivates the girl child in her studies, leading to her academic empowerment and subsequent potential for economic empowerment.

In a bid to assist the school, the ZNA mobilised army engineer artisans from the One Engineer Field Squadron of One Infantry Brigade to construct the dormitory block. This section of the ZNA is responsible for the communities in Matabeleland region and is its major vehicle for undertaking construction projects under community assistance work. The ZNA commander further said the relations between One Infantry Brigade and its communities in the Matabeleland region were not restricted to the construction of the dormitory alone.

“The brigade is actively involved in various projects with recent ones being the construction of a bridge on Nyazani River in Insiza district, parts of which were washed away by the heavy rains that fell last season,” he said. The brigade also participated in medical outreach programmes at Mapholisa Primary School in 2013 and at Filabusi District Hospital this year.

“The brigade recently commenced a new project at Sengezani Primary School near Guyu in Gwanda where it is constructing an Early Childhood Development block that is set to house 40 pupils, followed by a computer block to enable e-learning at the same school,” Lt-Gen Sibanda said.

There are various other projects that the ZNA intends to undertake but resources are affecting their commencement.
“It is very clear and important to note that in all these projects the ZNA only provides qualified personnel. The responsibility to provide building materials lies with the community. It is therefore the ZNAs’ appeal to the affected communities to speed up provision and mobilisation of resources to avoid stalling of projects,” said Lt-Gen Sibanda.
