PREPARATIONS for the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) Matabeleland Annual Business Awards dinner set for Friday this week are at an advanced stage, an official said.In a statement to Sunday Business last week, ZNCC administrator Mr Mduduzi Ncube said all was set for the award ceremony meant to honour outstanding businesses in Matabeleland.

“As much as business performance is generally slow, there are quite a number of companies which have managed to remain afloat, and as a chamber we believe this business practice needs to be recognised and celebrated,” said Mr Ncube.

He said the purpose of the awards was to “recognise remarkable and noteworthy business performance practised in the previous calendar year”.

“These awards are aimed at fostering a competitive culture within industry. A culture founded on good workmanship, with prospects of ultimately translating to improved product and service delivery, thereby heightening the spirit of excellence in mundane business practice, hence our theme: “International Synergies, Local Competitiveness & Global Relevance. —The Key To Addressing Zimbabwe’s Liquidity And Industrial Revolution,” said Mr Ncube.

He said close to 18 award categories would be recognised and these include Businessman of The Year, Businesswoman of The Year, Entrepreneur of The Year, ICT Company of the Year, Insurer of the Year, Most Visible Organisation, Outstanding Public Enterprise of The Year, Exporters from all sectors.

Other categories include Retailer of The Year, Manager of The Year, Constructor of The Year, Transformational Leader and Transport Service Provider of the Year.

Mr Ncube, however, said companies in Bulawayo were still facing operational challenges.

“Generally the economy in Matabeleland is performing radically slow due to the liquidity crunch that is affecting business operations and now forcing companies to down scale and introduce cost-cutting measures for survival,” said Mr Ncube.

The ZNCC applauded the Government for putting measures to curb the influx of substandard goods.

“The Chamber of Commerce would like to commend the Ministry of Industry and Commerce which on behalf of the Government of Zimbabwe contracted Bureau Veritas, a French-based company to carry out pre-shipment inspection and verification of conformity services on imported products in the country of export. This process will assist to curb the influx of sub-standard goods which are negatively affecting the implementation of Zimbabwe’s economic blueprint, Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation (Zim Asset) in particular, our growth and development agenda and the competitiveness of local industries,” he said.

Mr Ncube said ZNCC also commended the Government for identifying new markets in the lucrative European market.

“The Government is also working towards identifying investment partners and the creation of synergies with the European markets.  This lately has been noted from the visit by the European delegation which comprised executives from the European Investment bank (EIB) which dwelled on site visits to some of the industries in Bulawayo,” said Mr Ncube.
